Microsoft may have been the first to bring the idea of cloud computing to the general masses a couple years ago — who didn’t see the television commercial about a couple stuck at the airport victoriously proclaiming “to the cloud?”
What exactly is the cloud? “Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.” The NIST says the cloud-computing business model has five essential characteristics: on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity or expansion and measured service.
